ROOMATISM

When all the plummy plump
Is bruised to lumpy pith
Amid a local and general sag,
And all the grand and fervid passions
Are cold ashes in the grate,
And there it is, the lone fucking chop
The twenty fucking peas,
And the chunks of fucking carrot
On the clunky fucking plate,
And all the books swim
In a dark swash of print,
And the songs fade to a whisper
On the drums of well thatched ears,
The lips may yet move
With an odd line here or there
Of that reserved anarcho-jester,
The poem, whose rhythms,
Neurisms and truisms
Suggest all of the allusive all
That lies just beyond touch,
Beyond the fog and cloud and shadow,
Beyond the room and rheumatism.

The Last Day Of The Year

in memoriam Carol Novack and Kerry Leves

“he told me that writing poetry was the most beautiful thing anyone could do on this godforsaken earth”

                                                      -Roberto Bolano

The writing of a poem
Is problematical
As life itself:
Where did it come from?
Why is it here?
What does it mean?
Then it settles itself
Into ink, infused
Into the fibres of a page,
Signifying much, little
Or nothing much at all,
Or otherwise shimmering
Pixels on a screen,
In the e-tombstones
Of two dead poets,
Our friends, who wrote
Beautifully for reasons
Beautifully unclear,
Now departed to compose
In places we the living
Know not where.

SLEEP

   A little bottle of sleep
White tablets of sleep
Made by careful hands
In white latex gloves
And full hair nets
To keep anything foreign
Out of all the sleep
Poured into every bottle
A bitter foretaste
Of a blank destiny
A measured little dose of death
A sleep that is black and cold
Sleep that is dreamless
And would be worthless
Were it not sleep at least
And so worth every silver grain
Of the ten dollars it cost
To procure these priceless two
Weeks of sleep

OCCASIONALLY

OCCASIONALLY

I never knew the reason why
The evening and the dew
Never saw a dragon fly
Until I’d seen a few

It’s a wonder that I ever have
The smarts to lace my shoe
When suddenly I’m thinking
Of always calling you

Occasionally I do
Mulligatawny stew
Occasionally I do
How about you?

Sometimes you find you’re whistling
A tune that you abhor
Sometimes it’s like the midnight knock
Fondling at your door

Sometimes it’s like the key of life
Is jingling on your ring
Sometimes it’s all just sweet sweet peas
Germinating

Occasionally I view
A sky that’s tending blue
Occasionally I view
The view

And there’s the thought
That strikes me hard
I lost the game
But won the card
‘Twas on a whim
‘Twas to a wit
I don’t know why
I got bit

Occasionally I do
Autumnal hues accrue
Occasionally I do
Winter too

Occasionally I do
Mulligatawny stew
Occasionally I do
Rhubarb too
